Woolgrass bulrush grows in wet meadows, peaty marshes, sedge fens, ditches, and along lakeshores on wet sand or silt, muck, sedge peat, or somewhat acidic, sphagnum peat. It grows in clumps and spreads somewhat by rhizomes. It readily establishes by seed on exposed, moist mineral soil.
